Veterans Build is Habitat’s initiative to provide affordable housing and critical home repairs, as well as volunteer and employment opportunities to U.S. veterans, military service members and their families.
ABOUT OUR GLEN STREET, ROCHESTER “VETERANS BUILD” HOME
In 2015, Southeast NH Habitat for Humanity received an incredible donation from Wells Fargo – a donated home on Glen Street in Rochester, New Hampshire. Located in a family-oriented neighborhood, we are going to be building two condex units, one unit is for a qualifying local veteran family. Help us make ownership a reality for a local veteran family!
The home will require cash, in-kind services and many volunteer hours to put it back together – starting with the the ground up from the foundation to framing, roof, siding, windows and doors , insulation and drywall must be put in, flooring must be installed, walls must be painted, and then finally all the finishing touches – appliances, bathroom fixtures, lighting and more.
WHY IS SENH HABITAT FOCUSING ON VETERAN HOUSING & NEEDS?
- Nearly 4 million veteran households pay more than 30 percent of income for housing; more than 1.5 million of these households pay more than 50 percent of income for housing (severe cost burden).
- Nearly 1 million veterans who own homes are severely cost burdened, despite having access to VA loans and other assistance.
- A substantial subset of veterans struggles economically. Approximately 1.4 million veterans (6.7 percent) live in poverty.
- According to U.S. Census data, 10.1% of New Hampshire’s population are veterans, putting our state higher than the national average (8%). In addition, more than 100,000 of these NH veterans live in poverty, with 25% dealing with a disability, such as amputated limbs or post-traumatic stress disorder.
